Women and Land Rights

GNK-Landesa collaboration is working on various initiatives for economic empowerment of women and communities. Initiatives include:

    • Women’s Empowerment through Property Ownership in West Bengal
    • Mangrove Forest Programme in Sunderbans, West Bengal
    • Stronger Land Rights for women in Jharkhand

Women’s Empowerment through Property Ownership in West Bengal is designed to help SHG members, and their families, rectify and update their land records through Sangha Facilitation Centers (SFCs), which play a vital role in initiatives under the West Bengal State Rural Livelihood Mission (WBSRLM).

Mangrove Forest Programme in Sunderbans, West Bengal, focuses on creating awareness among community members through sensitization of women’s Self-Help Groups (SHG) on climate change, mangrove conservation, and the sustainable use of resources.

Stronger Land Rights for Women in Jharkhand,  builds on rural women’s understanding of land systems and ability to negotiate their land rights and create an enduring support system of women leaders, and also to increase the sensitivity of community leaders to women’s land tenure.

Core Activities Include:

  • Empower SHG Women – Identify and train women from Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to provide land record updating services within their communities, ensuring greater awareness and access to land rights.

  • Collaboration with stakeholders: Develop and strengthen collaboration with the State Rural Livelihoods Mission (SRLM) for establishment of SFCs (Single-Window Facilitation Centres) in all the 22 rural districts of West Bengal and 2 districts in Jharkhand, assisting in the updating of land records and ensuring rightful ownership for marginalized communities.

  • Direct engagement in the tribal district and with community members.

  • Panchayat/Village-level training on Women Land Literacy (WLL).

  • Sensitisation of women, community leaders and Government officials for creating awareness.
